The Financial Times and International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, have announced the winners of the 2009 FT Sustainable Banking Awards, with Triodos Bank of the Netherlands named as Sustainable Bank of the Year and Itau Unibanco of Brazil taking the overall Emerging Markets prize. With bank failures on the rise and the economy in turmoil, GreenChoice Bank in Chicago aspires to be one of the Midwest's first green lenders. U.S. Bank and SolarCity have entered into a partnership to finance solar projects for homeowners and businesses.The two companies have created a new tax equity fund to finance SolarCity’s groundbreaking solar lease option (SolarLease™) for homeowners and power purchase agreements (PPA) for businesses. Construction on another “green” building in downtown Waco, Texas, has begun with the groundbreaking on Wells Fargo’s 7,500-square-foot banking center at Third Street and Franklin Avenue. Wells Fargo officials say this will be the first green financial services building in Waco, with features that will reduce water and energy use and take advantage of recycled materials. Read more>>
New Resource Bank, San Francisco, has entered into stipulation with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and California Department of Financial Institutions to undertake various corrective actions. The bank believes that implementing these actions will enhance bank operations. New Resource Bank opened in October 2006 as the first "green bank" in the United States with a focus on both business and personal banking to help promote green and sustainable resources. Read more>>
Citizens National Bank, which has locations in Paris, Oakland and Charleston in Illinois, has opened an environmentally friendly banking branch in Terre Haute, Ind. The bank is hoping to achieve a gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Read more>>
Small Business Detroit interviews Craig Johnson, president and CEO, Franklin Bank, Southfield, Mich., on banks going green with paperless technologies.
